In a press conference early Tuesday, U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump refused to rule out using military force to acquire Greenland, as well as the Panama Canal for that matter.  Trump did rule out using military force to annex Canada, noting instead he would rely on “economic force.”

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a longtime U.S. ally and a founding member of NATO.

Speaking to reporters less than two weeks before he takes office on Jan. 20 and as a delegation of aides and advisers that includes Donald Trump Jr. is in Greenland, Trump left open the use of the American military to secure both territories. Trump’s intention marks a rejection of decades of U.S. policy that has prioritized self-determination over territorial expansion.

“I’m not going to commit to that,” Trump said, when asked if he would rule out the use of the military. “It might be that you’ll have to do something. The Panama Canal is vital to our country.” He added, “We need Greenland for national security purposes.”

Polymarket's betting market on the U.S. acquiring Greenland has seen close to $300,000 wagered but just 5 percent believing it will happen.  Polymarket correctly predicted Trump would become the next president of the United States.

Trump shared a video of an unidentified individual wearing a Make America Great Again hat claiming he lived in Greenland and wanted America to take over.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the United States officially announces that Greenland will come under US sovereignty by June 30, 2025, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise this market will resolve to "No".

Sovereignty is defined as the transfer of the majority of the territory of Greenland from its current status as an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark to being under the formal governance or jurisdiction of the United States, either as a state, territory, or other classification within the US system.

An official announcement made by the United States and Denmark that Greenland will come under US sovereignty will qualify, even if the actual transfer of sovereignty is yet to occur. Only announcements of official agreements or actions (e.g. executive order, signed legislation, etc.) will count - mere posts on Social Media will not.

The resolution source for this market will be official information from the governments of the US, Greenland, and Denmark , however a consensus of credible reporting confirming that Greenland has come under U.S. sovereignty will also qualify.
